Hi Steve,

I remember you from the M&K days. I will never forget your enthusiasm and passion for what you were doing. There is no doubt that passion drives the CE Industry. I am very sorry to read you are no longer at Sound Group Holdings as I know it was you who started the company. You arrived at our office as a newby many years ago but sold us on your vision.
Partnerships are tough, unless all parties are aiming in the same direction it always fails. You have a lot of courage to write about your mistakes.
Good luck with whatever you do, you were a visionary so no doubt you won't starve!

Cheers for now

Thanks for the kind words Corin,

I was just another statistic, my problem was choosing a business partner who had no passion for our industry. Nothing unusual and frankly it lasted a lot longer than most anyway. It took nearly twenty years before I got fed up.
I am still passionate about the industry, I just had the passion for that business knocked out of me.

Bravo Steve Hilliar, I am familiar with your old company and I have heard your name in great circles here in the UK. You seem to be a Yamaha legend, I believe you used to assemble their fine products in New Zealand and anyone who could convince a Japanese company to do that must have something going for them.
I take my hat off to you, what a pity you left the company because of conflict with a partner. This appears to be one of the most common downfalls in business. Anyway good luck to you and I am eager to read more.

Best wishes

Corin Britton

Hello Steve

I was intrigued to read your article regarding Sound Group Holdings Ltd, it helped me to fill in some of the missing gaps about the lad from Huntly, New Zealand.

You bet cha! the Hi-Fi industry was a real hoot back in the 80's, 90's and early 2000, like you I also had a lot of fun experimenting with and selling a range of products that we were all passionate about, making some money along the way but most importantly meeting a lot of very interesting characters and making some very good friends.

Unfortunatly I was forced to close Lakeland TV & Stereo in 2007 due to a slowing economy, lack of loyalty from major suppliers, greater competition from the big chain stores but mainly a loss of focus due to ill health.

Interesting article Steve, I look forward to reading the continuing story! We are still in Hamilton, maybe we could get together some time in the future.

Regards

This is a great post. There is no doubt you are not alone my friend. Unfortunately the world is full of greedy people. Business breeds greed and they fall apart because of it. If business partners could trust each other and just get on with it there would be no problem. However life is not like that American business has created greed and it has rubbed off all over the world. I am a victim of it just like you. I say you did the right thing by walking away. Good luck to you and remember what goes around, comes around.
